They are coming more frequently to my backyard. I have a pretty good variety of flowers so something has been in bloom all season.

At same cabin were huge rhododendrons (orig wild, planted in 1920s or 30s). I was sitting on steps between them when heard loud buzzing. At 1st thought was bumblebees in rhodis but looked up as I realized sound was 'regular.' A hummer was flying in aabout a 4-5 ft width arc in front of me going from side to side, almost within arms' reach. It kept it up for several minutes. Since there was nothing red around me (rhodis light pink), I still can't figure out what was going on. And since it never stopped, I don't even know what color/species it was.

My best experience occurred in a park on Pawley's Island. There was a mature hedge that was in full bloom and we were there at twilight, just as the grays were setting in. When we walked by the bush we saw a half dozen hummingbirds feeding on the generous blooms. Did not expect to see that because I thought they were territorial.

Wish the lighting was better, but I realize that they picked that moment to descend on the bush in swarm probably because the nectar is best and it is safer for them.

I wonder if the hummingbird saw its reflection in your glasses and thought it needed to scare off the competition?

It was just weird. And the humming was loud. Made me wonder if they can control the volume of wing beat.

He's got a red head so of course we call him "red." We have a hummingbird feeder in the back. Every evening we go out in the back yard and sit by the veggie garden and every evening he flits around, sometimes coming within a foot or so of our faces -- just to say .

This feed is live from a feeder that my friend maintains in front of his house in the Cactoctin's. I've never seen so many hummers in one place as he gets!
