So, I read the novel "The Far Pavilions" while on vacation last week.

Published 1978 and about 19th century India.

When I came across this passage, I just had to dig out my highlighter:

"It was inconceivable - fatuous and unjust and totally unfair - that two grown people who only wanted to marry each other should not be permitted to do so, when their marriage would harm no one."

In this case, referring to a British army officer and a Hindu widow, but of course our recent history made them really significant.

HOORAY FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY!!!
