although it is true that fires were a very real fear back then, this could not have helped.

"Second chance" coffins were very popular at times, since diagnosing death was an iffy thing back then and mistakes were made. Coffins with an escape hatch were not unusual (for vaults, of course, not underground burials).

Embalming, of course, removes all doubt.

The really big wheels would make for a nice smooth ride, and there's space behind the rider where you could put a sizable cargo basket.
