When the Beatles founded Apple, John Lennon was asked who his favorite American artist was. "Nilsson" was his one word answer. Paul McCartney was asked who his favorite American group was. Same answer.
This is the album for Nilsson aficionados, and a great entrée into a singular singer-songwriter. There's the commercial stuff to be sure, including the novelty hit "Coconut," and even at that there's some interesting stuff as Nilsson pitches his voice in three different registers to tell the story of a cure that's every bit as bad as the ailment. If he never did another album, Harry Nilsson would belong in the rock/pop pantheon for "Jump Into the Fire" and the soaring lament "Without You." But lucky for us, there is more. This album is like a good, old friend.
1. "Gotta Get Up"
2. "Driving Along"
3. "Early in the Morning"
4. "The Moonbeam Song"
5. "Down"
6. "Without You"
7. "Coconut"
8. "Let the Good Times Roll"
9. "Jump into the Fire"
10. "I'll Never Leave You"
And now the trivia question: Of the three albums picked this week for DU Album of the Day, what ties them together?
"Who Are You" by The Who
"Papas and Mamas" by The Mamas and the Papas
"Nilsson Schmilsson" by Harry Nilsson

[font color="white"]Mama Cass Elliott and Keith Moon both died prematurely, as music fans know. But did you know that both of them died in the same London flat, Elliott in 1974 and Moon in 1978? And that apartment was owned by none other than Harry Nilsson!
[font color="black"]And now you know . . . the rest of the story.
