The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI got new dog bowls for my dogs
I feed them twice per day and they both would just about inhale their food. Often one of them would barf it back up right after eating because they ate too fast. I found out about slow feed dog bowls and decided to try them out. It's too early to tell if it stops their barfing, but it does take them much longer to eat. I haven't timed them, but it takes about 3-5 minutes for them to eat while before they were done in seconds. At any rate the bowls definitely work as advertised. It takes them more time and effort to get the food out, but they still manage to eat everything.
The first time one of the two looked at me all pissed off about making her eat out of it and she wandered around a little before eating, but now they take right to it. If anyone has problems with their dogs barfing after they eat, these might be worth a try. The manufacturer makes a few different styles. I decided to go with the spiral. There's a few different manufacturers that make them, and I suspect most of the bigger pet stores should carry them.

(115,836 posts)It's got a number of small compartments that make the cats get the food out with their paws. I put kibble in the little compartments and set the dish on the floor. The cats walked over to it, sniffed it, pawed at the food a little, then looked up at me with a look like, "What the hell is this? And where are our regular bowls that we can just stick our faces in?" So even though there's plenty of food in this thing, they've been following me around, whining.

(205,995 posts)Though I have the opposite problem, have to practically bribe my dog to get him to eat, but he's not exactly thin, and the vet said he's healthy, though he could lose a pound or two...

(10,952 posts)give them all their food at one time. If you only give them a third of their food at a time, wait a few minutes, give them another thrid and so on, they would force them to slow down overall.
ETA - I went to amazon.com to look at review of this product. One person posted a clip of his/her dog the day the got the bowl. The dog figured out the flaw with the bowl. Their dog figured out the if you flip the dish over, you get all the food without having to working for it.

(14,881 posts)I have one dog that eats slowly, carefully and practically needs to be bribed to eat. Actually, he does need to be bribed. He won't start until I rub his hips, back and back legs (left over from injury he suffered years ago). He was always the lean dog, although now that he's slowing down he's more solid.
The other eats it so fast it's frightening. He's the plump one, and is always sure he's starving to death. He doesn't barf it up, but he does sometimes choke on a kibble. Even choking, he still tries to eat. I'm afraid I'll be giving him the heimlich someday.

(36,827 posts)They have been through 5 feedings so far and no barfing.

(23,272 posts)Horses don't vomit when they bolt their food, they choke - sometimes fatally.
We put 3-4 softball size rocks in their feed buckets - small enough for the horses to push around to get at their grain but too large to mistakenly eat (cut them some slack, they have a brain the size of a walnut). It also foils those who "flip" their buckets and throw the grain out onto the floor.
I'd presume you could do something similar for dogs. Put some largish rocks in the feed bowl that the dog has to work around to eat.

(22,899 posts)My cats have a tendency to eat too fast when they're hungry, and guess what happens?? (yep!)
I've been trying to think of a solution and this may be it.
(when they eat kibble, they often swallow it whole!)

(115,836 posts)They apparently think it's too much work to have to retrieve their food with their paws.

(22,899 posts)Easy for me to say-- mine don't have the bowls, so they don't whine.
If you hang in there and show you mean it, they'll likely acquiesce.
I was just looking up the prices and, including the shipping, they're rather pricey.
Maybe they have them at pet stores-- at least there's no shipping cost.

(22,899 posts)How long have you been trying to feed your cat with a bowl like that? You know they don't like change-- it may be par for the course. They get hungry enough, they'll adjust. (wishful thinking)
PetCo has some good stuff.
Thanks and good luck!!
