Man Rides Moose (Ontario)

Published on Jun 21, 2015

A man has been filmed riding a moose as it waded across a river, sparking outrage online.

Video posted to YouTube on Saturday shows the shirtless male standing poised on the edge of a boat as its captain drives alongside the beast in what is believed to be British Columbia Canada's Muskwa Kechika.

"Get on up there … Let's get on that thing," another man is overheard saying behind him.

The central character can be seen clapping his hands and hoisting his shorts above his knees, before leaping onto the unsuspecting moose's back to raucous laughter from his mates.

Submerged in near shoulder deep water, the animal is powerless to buck its uninvited passenger and is filmed making a panicked beeline for the bank as the man rides its bareback.

Facebook page Wolf Tracker BC, which lists wolf sightings in the British Columbia area, posted the clip saying it had reported the group responsible to authorities.

"This moron is going to be charged with harassing wildlife," its administrators wrote in the caption.

"This is what NOT to do."

Most viewers shared similar sentiments, with one commenter remarking that the men would not be so bold coming up against a creature out of the water.

"Next time can you guys try that with a bear and record," one wrote.

"Would love to see the results."

Stressing out an animal is senseless, getting close to a wild animal is stupid.

I just saw this:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/laurenstrapagiel/canadian-authorities-investigating-video-that-shows-man-ridi#.ayRBdpJ83Z

Excerpt:

“The general public has been in contact with us and there have been some names that have been forwarded to us,” said Sgt. David Vince of the Fort St. John Conservation Office, who first saw the video himself on Monday morning.

With no clear faces in the video, they’re trying to determine where the video was shot. Sgt. Vince said the teal hue indicates glacial water and identifying the surrounding mountains will help narrow down a location.

Ontario doesn't have landscape as such in the video.

Wildlife harassment laws here are strict. The doofus will no doubt be facing charges.

I'm glad he'll face charges for his stupidity. The poor moose was frantic!

so to speak.

Of course a moose isn't meant to have anything on its back. Even a horse takes some time to adjust its centre of gravity when it first has a rider on its back. While I don't know if it could have drowned (moose are huge and very strong; I looked up the max depth of the lake and it's 140 ft deep), it could have been injured by the idiot jumping on its back. It was obviously distressed.

Too bad the moose didn't charge, would have given the moron a lesson. The court will have to do it then.

if was injured. I hope it wasn't and also that it didn't inhale some water in its struggles and end up with pneumonia or something.

I hope the guy gets a heavy fine at least. I can't stand people like him.

I would think if its back was injured it couldn't swim. It certainly upset the poor creature's balance when the idiot jumped on him. Hopefully it's ok, just was startled. The only thing that would be on its back would be a predator, like a cougar.

If someone is stupid enough to do this, you often wonder what else they get up to...

in northern BC, you'd be surprised at some of the dumb crap that goes on. it's a totally different way of life.

I could go on but for now I'll just say this video, now that I know where it happened, has me very unsurprised.

Chasing that poor moose in that deep water was harassment without the guy jumping on its back!

Another thing about riding an animal in water - if you get anywhere close to in front of it, it's likely to try to climb on top of you. We used to go swimming with our horses in old phosphate pits. One girl's horse liked swimming out into the deeper part and she swam off his back and tried to lead him to the edge. When his hooves hit her legs, he tried to climb up as if she was solid land. Fortunately another kid was close enough to guide his horse and protect her, but it could have gotten bad. As it was, she had some bad bruising on her legs from his hooves hitting them.

Yes, it definitely was harassment. Imagine how he treats his pets.

If they were just sitting in the boat and moose leisurely swam by, then I'd say have at it Hoss, but pursuing the moose is so terribly wrong.

the only people that want to mess with a moose are either drunk, stupid, or most likely both.

The idiots in this video would probably go "Here, kitty kitty" to a mountain lion.

I lived in Florida and LOVED to go into the water to swim. I wasn't stupid, though, and didn't mess around where there were alligators in fresh/brine environments, or in the gulf where there were sharks and worse, barracuda.

Plain stupid, cruel and idiotic these people were. They had no idea what they were fooling with, but if the moose would have been a bit bigger and a bit more confident, those guys would have had a world of hurt put on them.
