The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI want to attend my son's graduation from Cape May NJ Coast Guard camp end of July. Where should I
stay? Money is a factor. I'm in Arizona and know little about the East Coast.

(54,414 posts)You should probably fly into Philly and rent a car, find a motel or a Holiday Inn in or near Wildwood, and drive down. I don't know coastal NJ at all. It can get very hot and muggy, very humid heat, not at all like Arizona.

(25,816 posts)Very nice, but a bit pricey for me. Atlantic City is 50 miles away. There must be a few places in between.
I checked the flights into Philly, around $500 round trip from Tucson (my nearest airport). So I'm on the same page with you,
just still looking. Thanks for the reply.

(54,414 posts)I should have known about Wildwood and graduation time. Probably like trying to book a hotel in Boston at Harvard graduation time, too. Ocean city is a longer drive, but $1000 a night is ridiculous.
I ran into the same thing when I decided at the last minute to attend the Democratic Convention in Denver in 2008. Hotels were $1000 a room upwards. I said WTF???? Instead, I found a college kid who was gay and went to stay with his boyfriend and sublet his room for $450 for the whole month of August. I called and said I'd pay his price for the five days of the convention and he could rent it out again for the rest of the month if he wanted. It involved an extra 15 minutes of walking time a day. Definitely better, and $4500 cheaper, than a $1000 room at the Hyatt that I could have had for $169 a night the week before or the week after.

(25,816 posts)Booking.com and others want you to sign up for an app before doing business. Never had an "app", never will.
I'm old school, which means technologically challenged. Thanks for your effort.

(23,340 posts)The cheaper thing to do is to stay on the Delaware Bay side than the ocean side.
Cape May, downtown, is an old-time, Victorian beach resort. It is the southernmost point of New Jersey, the northern side of the mouth of the Delaware Bay, across from Lewes, Delaware, another cool town.
Just look online, go for the best price.

The Atlas is not too pricey.
Also look at The Villas and Cape May Courthouse. Not far from the Coast Guard camp.

(16,190 posts)but they used to have guest lodging and primitive camping facilities (meaning tent only) at the training center. Not many (it is a Coast Guard base after all), but since you're looking around anyway, you might check that.
Congratulations to your son.

(31,396 posts)It's about an hour's drive from there to Cape May.
You might try that.
Didn't know your dates, but just stuck in 3 days of the last week in July and it comes up with some very reasonable
options.
