This version is courtesy of trof, posted in DU2 in 2005:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x4169520
Roy Rogers comes in from a hard day's work on the ranch.
His boots are all muddy, he's too tuckered out to clean them, and he doesn't want to incur Dale's wrath, so he leaves them on the porch.

The next morning he goes out to clean them and finds them ripped to shreds.

"Dang, Gabby. Those were almost brand new Luchesse ostrich and iguana boots. Wonder what happened to them?"

"Wal, Roy, there's been a ol' mountain lion a-spookin' the horses the last coupla nights. Coulda been him."

Roy saddles Trigger, puts his trusty Winchester in the scabbard, and rides off.

Several hours later he comes riding back in.
There is a large dead mountain lion slung over his saddle horn.
And Gabby sez,

But not just math tests, actually. There were a lot of classes that had test questions that were so far out there, you wanted to drop by the professor's house and take just ONE hit off whatever he/she was smoking.

Thanks, Salmon! And HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

34. My physics professor wrote exams that nearly everyone walked away from feeling horrible.
Sun Jun 21, 2015, 12:16 PM
Jun 2015

He was a fantastic lecturer, he loved teaching, he had many fine demonstrations, the labs run by his teaching assistants were exciting, he was readily available to help in his office hours or by appointment... but his exams were like a brutal walk through the desert after a plane crash in which you'd suffered a head injury and everything was blurry. He went so far as to sprinkle little math and calculus hints throughout his tests, I suppose to keep people from giving up entirely and taking the "F," but there was never more than one or two people who left his exams feeling optimistic about their performance.

Showing your work was all important to him, not whether you found the solution. You could work both sides of a question, forwards and backwards, never meeting in the middle, never finding the "correct answer," and still get eight out of the ten points possible on the question.

People who'd been celebrated and praised throughout their education for the high scores they got on multiple choice "bubble" exams, some of the "I got a perfect score on the math section of my SAT!" crowd, would leave his exams in a state of shock.

Most were like you describe. Brutal exams, but lots of partial credit. The secret is to trust the physics and look for the geometric symmetry that simplifies the problem, or even makes it trivial to solve. It helps if you know and are comfortable with the math, too.

One professor allowed a one page crib. I always made one up, but never used it because, as the professor knew well, a crib was useless on his exams. They were that tough. And yup, you had better show all your work if you want to pass.

But that was back in the 1970's

So I appreciated the adorable black kittens this week. Last summer I rescued a kitten from a grocery story parking lot and he's growing up to be such a beautiful cat. I had no idea what he looked like, since all I could see were his big eyes in the dark, but he has turned out to be just gorgeous...

Loved "Pugboat," but the first one looks just like my kitty, who goes in/out/in/out. Before I put in the window AC, she used to be able to hop up on a bench and look at me through the window. Then I would have to go open the door for her. Now she has to project her powers of ESP to get in, and she's pretty good at that, too!

Here's my contribution to today's thread:

I was so terrible at math, but I somehow placed in Calculus for my 1st year of college. I failed miserably. I retook it, went to every class, office hour, every office hour for the TA, and still failed everything. I got a pity D because they knew by that point I was a history major.

And the hot-rod Chihuahua is adorable.
