National Fudge Day National Fudge Day is a food holiday that allows you to indulge in your favorite flavor of of this delicious confectionary. Some of the most popular fudge flavors are chocolate, chocolate nut, peanut butter, maple, and maple nut.A Western confectionery, fudge is usually sweet and rich. It consists of combining sugar, butter and milk, heating it to the correct temperature and then mixing it while it cools to get it to a smooth, creamy consistency. There are many varieties and flavors of fudge, with chocolate being the most popular.
In 1886 a letter was found, written by Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar college in Poughkeepsie, New York, referring to fudge that her cousin had made, in Baltimore Maryland, selling it for 40 cents per pound. Hartridge was able to obtain the recipe and in 1888, she made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction.
In the late 19th century, some shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce similar products as the Vassar College fudge and sold it to summer vacationers. Fudge is still produced in some of the original shops located on the famous island. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-fudge-day-june-16/
Fresh Vegetables Day Five portions a day? Seven? Ten? Nutritionists agree that when it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, most of us just arent getting enough. Make a change on Fresh Veggies Day, and invite family and neighbours around for a fun and surprising meat-free feast.
Originally, Fresh Veggies Day was celebrated in early summer, when the tastiest new-season vegetables start to become plentiful. With one eye on the weather, take a trip to your local farmers market or specialist food store and stock up on whatever is ripe along with some free recipe ideas. For some early crops, you may even be able to go to a farm and pick your own: why not get some friends together and plan a day out?
Of course, most gardeners will tell you that nothing beats the pride, satisfaction and taste of home-grown veg. Seed clubs and gardening forums make it easy, and affordable, to cultivate your own weird and wonderful varieties. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fresh-veggies-day/
Cherry Tart Day It is thought that the origins of Cherry Tart Day date back to the annual National Cherry Festival held in Michigan, USA. Cherries were plentiful in supply but their uses were limited. Although cherries are grown on several continents, they have a relatively short growing season.
In a cherry tart, the fruit is presented in an appealing open-faced crusty pastry shell with superior ingredients. Enjoy a scrumptious slice with custard or ice cream, as the pastry crumbles with the tangy cherry taste rich in antioxidants and even thought to help inflammation.
Bake your cherry tart at home or enjoy choosing one at your local confectioner or cake shop. This Cherry Tart Day, invite friends round for tea and offer them a slice. Alternatively, give this delicious dessert pride of place after your main course, on the top shelf of the sweet trolley and rightfully so. Delight your taste buds! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherry-tart-day/

(112,368 posts)that made some great fudge. I particularly like the chocolate amaretto and chocolate mint flavors.
As for fresh vegetables, I've been making some deluxe salads as of late and including all types of lunch meats (honey ham, applewood smoked turkey); plus blueberries, cherries, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, apricots, grapefruit, and mandarin oranges; multiple types of lettuce, dried and regular tomatoes, jalapeno-stuffed olives; then topping it off with blue cheese, a bit of Montreal steak seasoning, and for the dressing I alternate between Italian, cherry-chipotle or a pomegranate vinaigrette.
Cherry tarts are delicious, but I'm not much of a baker. If I attempt to bake a dessert I'd be inclined to make a rum cake.

(38,958 posts)I am very much of the "clean out the fridge" salad maker.
If it's in there it can pretty much go into the salad.

(112,368 posts)but I've put on some weight recently. For the first time in my life I weigh what I'm supposed to weigh for my height. I'm used to being 25 or 30 pounds underweight so it is putting some strain on my lower back. I might even have to start doing sit-ups.

(38,958 posts)visited there a few years ago and while we stayed in Mackinac City we took the ferry ride over to the island for the day. Just loved it and want to go back. Perhaps sometime soon......

(34,426 posts)than a day trip. You really are transported back through time at night when all you can hear are the occasional clip clop of horse's hooves on the pavement. It's magic. I haven't been so relaxed in years.
