(20,176 posts)2. Having read the book, I can't picture Ian Holm as Frank Begbie.
Something that is really played down in the movie from the book is the fact that there is a spree killer in Edinburgh who is stabbing people to death in muggings and bar-fights...and Renton suspects Begbie. It's a large part of why he is terrified of him when he's planning to rip-off his friends. Robert Carlyle barely pulls off that menace and only because his portrayal is so much a hooligan.
Ironically, Michael Caine seems like a more convincing Begbie because he can play it exactly the opposite...just ice-cold.
