Ewww alert: Pink Slime wasn't just a McD thing, baby.

http://fitperez.com/2012-03-11-pink-slime-in-ground-beef/?from=PH#.T17eQTHy-a8

70% of supermarket ground beef contains pink slime.
The woman who approved this use of Pink Slime is now on the board of directors at the company that produces pink slime.

THAT is some fuckin bullshit.

Gerald Zirnstein, a former USDA scientist who coined the term, quit his job after his bosses approved its use in our beef and now grinds his own hamburger meat to avoid digesting the stuff. In an interview, he recalled that when he brought up the issue to former undersecretary of agriculture, Joann Smith, she simply responded that "it’s pink, therefore it’s meat."
She now works for the company that produces pink slime and has made millions of dollars as a result of her legalizing the use of the cheap excuse for real meat.

While I meant what you know I meant, it still irritated me that the MSM tried to equate the slaughter of animals with picking vegetables.

We've raised one steer for beef but got more than we could use so we didn't do it again. But now that our horse breeding operation has scaled down (and maybe stopped) we need to do something to maintain our agricultural exemption.

The young man who has been helping us out with the horses would like some cattle around and once he finishes his education, we may work with him to get a few cows and breed a few calves a year. We could raised grass fed beef, sell direct to consumers, and only butcher when we have all the meat from a steer allocated between his family, us and our buyers.

I've got to check into the regulations on selling - I may have to sell through the place that would butcher the meat for us. I know there are farmers around here that are selling beef direct to consumers so it's not impossible.

If you are going to eat beef, it seems the safest way to do it is to raise the cattle yourself. Great that the fellow who has been helping with the horses knows what he is doing, that is the best all around. When I was a kid, my folks would buy and split beef still on the hoof with others and that way it would fit in the freezer. Back then, we weren't worried about hormones and pink slime, we were just cheap

But the meat we got from that steer was the best I'd ever eaten.

The young man just turned 18, just got his GED, and wants to train horses for a living. Since he's gotten into roping, having some steers around to rope would be great for him. Now he's got to haul his horse down the road and work a friend's cattle.

Meanwhile, we've got ten or so acres that are underutilized. Might as well throw a few cows and calves out on it.

and they promise they never use pink slime. They don't buy it and they won't use it.

If I wasn't already a loyal Publix customer, that would make me one.

But since I can't be a new loyal customer, I'll do what I can to get someone else to be.

I'm only ever there in the evening or on weekends...I always hear on TV about people having their butcher do custom cuts for them - I'd be happy if I could just get a couple 2 lb packs of hamburger. Maybe I should stop in and see them during the day some time...

lol, I just heard some lady on NPR saying something about people getting upset over nothing - the pink slime process is perfectly safe. The ammonia gas used to kill bacteria is FDA approved and people should just stop complaining about how they found a way to use all the cow. All those lips and assholes gotta go somewhere right?

And she might be 100% correct. But that doesn't make it any less gross. The good news is that schools will now have a choice of whether or not to use it where they had no choice but to use it before.

Yes, I understand gross is subjective. That shit is just gross enough that I won't eat it on purpose and I'll be hoppin mad if someone gives it to me on the sly.

WD stores are dirty 10 minutes after they open. Publix stores are clean. Always.
I think Publix does cost a few pennies more but it's worth it to me because they spend those pennies on floor managers and cleaning supplies.

Although, I can see it being pretty undetectable in frozen packaged patties and other things ie Steakum type products.

Most people know what ground beef is supposed to look like.
