https://www.yahoo.com/food/one-of-the-last-three-remaining-howard-johnsons-115326645547.htmlHoward Johnsons which was often referred to as HoJos was the most successful of the early chain restaurants in the United States. At one point there were nearly 1,000 of them across the country. HoJos was so popular that it used to sell a line of frozen foods. The chain was perhaps most famous for its signature orange roof and range of 28 ice cream flavors. The restaurant even makes an appearance on Mad Men, the hit TV show set in the 1960s.
However, business declined in the 1980s as more and more competitors entered the market with fresher, more appealing menus. Regardless, the restaurant still evokes a deep sense of nostalgia for for those who dined there as children, especially Baby Boomers. Two older businessmen tell NPR, that they came to the restaurant as boys, and then brought their own kids. One of them adds, Its a landmark everyone has good memories. For those who want to dine at a Howard Johnsons, the two remaining locations are in Bangor, Maine and Lake George, N.Y.

(21,925 posts)I believe the company was founded in the 1800s and is credited with being the first American restaurant chain. They originally were built next to railroad tracks to serve as rest stops for weary train passengers. I think they went out of business in the 1960s and some of their buildings became Howard Johnson and McDonalds restaurants. I remember my parents stopping at their cool freeway overpass restaurants while on long trips in the 1950s where you could sit and eat and watch the cars go by.

Truth, when I was a child, I preferred vanilla. Which reminds me that Howard Johnson's used to have a commercial years ago advertising their 28 flavors, the tag line of which was a small boy saying "I like vanilla." Isn't on YT, though, I don't think.

(12,132 posts)when i was in school. I was a bellman and delivered a lot of room service from the restaurant - which was great for me because there was a waitress there I was really keen on.

(53,339 posts)The good news was that it happened to be during Balloon Fest. The bad news was that the balloons were grounded due to rain soon after they launched. When I think of Howard Johnson's I think of wet balloons.

(12,132 posts)balloons come to mind when i think of that waitress.
I mean, because she was in charge of them for kids parties.
She also wore a big curly wig. Because her natural state was a buzzcut and army boots. She was a total punk rock girl long before it was cool.

Did love the clam strips though. *sigh*

(7,473 posts)I don't think I've seen a HoJo's in my neck of the woods for at least 30 years.
When I was in college(early 1960's), we would hop the bus and take in a movie, stopping at HoJo's before the ride back. That sandwich sure tasted great after dorm food.

Pennsylvania turnpike, near King of Prussia. Howard Johnsons at every reststop. They were everywhere.
We were out of money. One of my friends used the last of his cash to buy salt-water taffy, before he realized what the car problem was. That was all we had to eat for the next 24 hours, until I hitched into town to Western Union to get money cabled to me by my parents. This friend had a credit card he didn't tell me about, and got the car fixed while I was traveling back and forth.
We were in high school. We borrowed the car, without permission, from another friend's parents who were away on vacation. All kinds of interesting repercussions.
Mom swears she was going to take me to Woodstock (I was 5).
