Best free ways to speed up a computer?

Computer's a bit sluggish. I was wondering if there were any good ways to speed it up without spending anything out of pocket. I do have Avast antivirus which has noted by slower computer but whatever services they recommend to speed it up cost money, and I'd rather not do that. I also have Malwarebytes which I installed in the hope that it might remove anything slowing it down, but it hasn't found anything.

Any good ideas?

Edited to add:

I actually have, Roy.

And disable or turn off the auto start for any service you don't need.

If you turn off the auto start, the service is still there but only starts when you need the program using it.

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services > Services

Right Click on the Service that is set to Automatic and select Properties, change to Manual.

Reboot your computer.

I remember back in the early 90's when you had to call for tech support there was a game company that had the last four digits of their tech support number as 7836 and it didn't take long before people realized they were calling 1-800-555-RTFM.

ON EDIT:

If you're not enthusiastic about fire and hot gases, you could get the extra oompf you need from a foot pedal
