NAACP Day Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was one of the earliest and most influential civil rights organization in the United States. During its early years, the NAACP focused on legal strategies designed to confront the critical civil rights issues of the day. They called for federal anti-lynching laws and coordinated a series of challenges to state-sponsored segregation in public schools, an effort that led to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared the doctrine of separate but equal to be unconstitutional. Though other civil rights groups emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, the NAACP retained a prominent role within the movement, co-organizing the 1963 March on Washington, and successfully lobbying for legislation that resulted in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Act. http://www.history.com/topics/naacp

(25,560 posts)From "Anna Pavlova: Pages of My Life":
"I can still remember my enthusiasm when one day (I was eight years old) I heard that we were to celebrate Christmas by going to see a performance at the Maryinsky Theatre. ... When we started ... the snow was brightly shining in the reflected light of street lamps and shop windows. Our sleigh was noiselessly speeding along the hard surface, and I felt unspeakably happy, seated beside my mother, her arm tenderly enclosing my waist. 'You are going to enter fairyland,' said she, as we were being whirled across the darkness toward the theatre, that mysterious unknown. ... As soon as the orchestra began to play, I became very grave and attentive, eagerly listening, moved for the first time in my life by the call of Beauty. But when the curtain rose, displaying the golden hall of a wonderful palace, I could not withhold a shout of delight. ... In the second act a swarm of youths and maidens appeared, and danced a most delightful waltz. 'How would you like to dance thus?' asked my mother with a smile. 'Oh,' I replied, 'I should prefer to dance as the pretty lady does who plays the part of the Princess. One day I shall be the Princess, and dance upon the stage of this very theatre.' My mother muttered that I was her silly little dear, and never suspected that I had just discovered the idea that was to guide me throughout my life."

My daughter and my husband tease me about him. My husband is more cruel about it though, he think Michael ruined the Doobie Brothers.
I always tell him I appreciated the Doobies pre Michael and with Michael.
I have his Motown album on my ipod.
