360 Shades of Gray

Turns out 50 isn’t so much after all. In fact, were Ms. James in the paint business, she’d have the second least extensive line of those surveyed, coming in just ahead of Farrow & Ball, which offers 20 shades of gray paint.

Sherwin-Williams, meanwhile, offers 95 different shades of gray; Behr offers 99; and Benjamin Moore offers 360.

Much like Ms. James’ book, gray paint has in recent years moved from being an edgy choice to a mainstream décor decision, says Debra Kling, a New York-based color consultant.
