(10,575 posts)Larry Henley, the singer whose raucous falsetto on Bread and Butter gave the Newbeats their biggest pop hit in the 1960s and who later co-wrote Wind Beneath My Wings, a ballad that has become all but inescapable at weddings, sports shows, piano bars and presidential galas, died Dec. 18 in Nashville. He was 77.
The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, which inducted Mr. Henley in 2012, announced the death. The cause was Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder, said his attorney and business manager, Charles Andrews.
Mr. Henley was born in Texas and after a short-lived stab at an acting career began to focus on breaking into rock music. He joined up with the singing brothers Marc and Dean Mathis to form the Newbeats in 1964, and they had a smash that year with Bread and Butter, a rollicking nonsense song distinguished mostly by Mr. Henleys piercing falsetto.
The song which features the lyrics I like bread and butter, I like toast and jam, thats what my baby feeds me, Im her loving man climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. pop charts. It continued to resonate through commercials, notably for Sunbeam Bread , and its use in films as varied as 9 1/2 Weeks (1986) and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004).

Wouldn't pay a nickel to see it onscreen. Might not even watch when it hits HBO.

(95,337 posts)Outside of some trailers, there hasn't been any previews of this movie. Usually if a movie is any decent acting wise there would have been some sneak previews to the movie critics to help promote the 'word-of-mouth' that this will be a great movie for people to see.
As far as I can tell no one has seen this movie. When movies do not have previews for critics it means the people who made the movie know it's shit and they don't want to scare away movie goers.
However, just because it hasn't been reviewed yet doesn't mean people won't see it so who knows. But honestly I think anything that is softcore porn for women ususally does better on TV than the theaters. If anything it could end up being a cult classic like Showgirls.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)and there are STILL no reviews for it. Dead giveaway a studio knows it has a turd on its hands and are keeping the critics away.
First time I saw "Showgirls" I sat there stunned, not knowing what the hell to think. After finally "getting" that film, I now tune in every time it appears on TV -- it really is something special.

(95,337 posts)There is a big difference between women sitting at home reading trashy sexy books and women going to movie theaters and sitting there watching it on the big screens. '9 1/2 weeks' was geared towards women with sexy, brooding Mickey Rourke leading Kim Bassinger during 3 months of sexual escapades - it did not do well in the theaters. But as a rental it has done really well. Women would rather sit at home and watch the movie in private where they don't have to show their embarrasment as the graphic sex scenes are up there on the screen.
BUT having said that.....
If the movie is really that bad it could become a bit campy in nature where people could go have fun making fun of the movie at the theater. But then again not sure if I want to drop $15 on a ticket to do that with a movie. I mean I wanted to see 'Foxcatcher', which has garnered a slew of great reviews and award nominations and I still haven't seen it. So why would I go see a movie like '50 Shades of Grey' just to sit there and mock it?
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)and become a midnight favorite. I have dropped $$$ to go see "Showgirls" in the theatre, but the theatre was The Castro here in SF and I was seeing it with an audience of primarily gay men -- in that setting it becomes a Total Experience and it is completely worth it.

Those who don't laugh are incensed by the inaccurate and somewhat defamatory portrayal of their culture.

(4,851 posts)Those that love it, will go early, but then it will drop off quickly. I doubt its going to set major box office records, but it should open well. As for the film itself, the studio has allowed to leak that the stars have poor chemistry without much fight, so I think that is probably true. I think it will try to go far on shock value. I am glad they got Sam Taylor-Johnson to direct it, she is brilliant.
