I found a cedar waxwing dead, on my neighbors' lawn. There were no signs of injury, but I looked closer and noticed a cluster of cotoneaster berries stuffed in its beak. I was curious about the cause of death, so I googled, "cedar waxwing dead berries in beak"

<snip>
"In fact, these birds have quite a reputation for gluttony. Audubon once noted that waxwings “gorge themselves to such excess as sometimes to be unable to fly...I have seen some which, although wounded and confined to a cage, have eaten of apples until suffocation deprived them of life.”

Is the species better off with this trait?

I think I'll put up a little sign with a cab company's phone number, in case the little fuzzy buddies need help getting home.
