A Colorado man was recently rushed to the University of Colorado Hospital's Burn Intensive Care Unit, after a flashlight exploded inside of his mouth.
Last week, Christopher Reid Carrington placed a flashlight between his lips while he used both of hands to rummage for tools in the back of his truck. However, reportedly within seconds, the 325 LED flashlight (Lumen) exploded.
Carrington was unable to speak, so his 7-year-old son immediately dialed 911.
"Carrington says he spent four days in the hospital with a tube down his throat so he could breathe," 9News reports."He was told he suffered from third-degree burns to his lip, tongue and throat."

(38,317 posts)Other batteries are less likely to explode, they just get really, really hot and maybe POP! Well, except for lead-acid cells where hydrogen generated in recharging when mixed with the proper amount of oxygen, can go BANG!
Here is a lithium battery charged improperly as a NiMH and then assaulted:
I'd never blame the victim. These newer higher energy density batteries are new territory for us silly humans, and it will take some time before we accept these accidents as if they were merely burning gasoline fueled automobiles...

(20,234 posts)I just bought some wire to battery heat my socks, and we've been debating what kind of batteries to use. The USB phone chargers made sense to me, but my husband's against it because once LI batteries catch fire, he says they generate their own oxygen so you can't just use a fire extinguisher on them. He's thinking biking through snow while shooting flames from my feet might look dramatic, but in the end might not be quite what I'm looking for.

Pop for the Columbia heated boots. They start at $75.

Plus I need gloves, too, and it's stupid to spend more on fingers and toes than I'd save on gas biking on the days that are below 30. At 30 degrees, I can still manage.
I am gonna go with other batteries though.
