I got to attend the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl birthday celebration concert last night.

And holy shit - the most amazing night of music I have ever had the privilege of witnessing. Just guest after guest - there was Paul Stanley (Kiss), then Tenacious D, then Slash, then Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne / Black Label Society), then Perry Ferrell (Jane's Addiction), then Lemme (Motorhead) lead the grand finale. They played some truly awesome covers including Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Queen, The Rolling Stones, and lots of Foo Fighters original songs including a couple off the new album Sonic Highways. It was truly an awesome sight to behold.

In the midst of Foo Fighters‘ Saturday night concert in Los Angeles, Dave Grohl marveled at the evening’s talent fearing they had already played the biggest show of 2015 with it only being a week into the New Year. One thing is certain — Foo Fighters set the bar high with Dave Grohl’s birthday bash at The Forum.

Though nothing more was known other than the fact that Foo Fighters were booking a special last-minute gig at the Forum to give Grohl an early birthday present (his birthday is Jan. 14), it became pretty clear early on that this would be an evening not only full of Foo Fighters favorites, but a who’s who of rock turning out to pay homage and get in on the fun. KISS‘ Paul Stanley kicked off the night, joining Foo Fighters for an electric opening performance of ‘Detroit Rock City’ and ‘Do You Love Me’ much to the delight of Grohl and those in attendance.

Next up on the guest list was Tenacious D duo Jack Black and Kyle Gass, stars of the ‘Learn to Fly’ video, along with the one and only Slash. Black led the audience in a ‘Happy Birthday’ to Grohl before hundreds of balloons engulfed the stage below and all through the two song appearance by the trio of guests they were kicking balloons out of the way. A spirited cover of Queen‘s ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ came first, with Black then taking lead vocals for Led Zeppelin‘s ‘Immigrant Song’ (seen above). Owning the appearance, Black was so amped up he lifted his shirt to show his belly as he walked the catwalk and tossed the shirt aside before exiting.

This one by far was the best I've ever seen. The total time of the concert was well over 4 1/2 hours. It started at 8:00 and ended at 12:30.

I'm a big fan of the early Van Halen, but Roth seems kind of... special?

I can't imagine how Eddie Van Halen put up with that shit all that time.

I was thinking about this earlier - the Foo Fighters are one of those bands that can announce a show two days before they play, sell out in five minutes, and then when the actual show happens, they turn down the lights, bring out guest after guest, and just rock the fucking place out.

You get bands like the Foo Fighters and other modern acts like System Of A Down, that are the real deal, and can bring the place down wherever they go. And then you get fake ass idiots like Nickelback and Linkin Park that put out shitty album after shitty album, and they are only popular because people listen to the radio and don't bother to seek out better music. And no way could they get this caliber of guest appearances like Dave got at the last minute. No fucking way. And I can guarantee there's no one on the planet that loves music as much as Dave does.

He was/is a heck of a front man.

I've just been in so many bands and in tight quarters with crazy musicians for years. The ones full of that kind of swagger risk getting strangled
