Katzenklavier

The Katzenklavier is a conjectural musical instrument which consists of a line of cats fixed in place with their tails stretched out underneath a keyboard so that they cry out in pain when a key is pressed. The cats would be arranged according to the natural tone of their voices. This instrument was described in the 16th century book by French writer Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin “Musiciana, descriptions of rare or bizarre inventions”. There is no official record of a cat organ actually being built. American composer Charlie Dees composed 2 concerti for katzenklavier in 2004, but they remain unperformed.
