The Gotch

In Clare Suffolk’s Church of Saints Peter and Paul, there is The Gotch, a beer jug presented to the bell ringers in 1729 by the vicar, Matthew Bell. It holds 32 pints and bears the inscription “sonant canore” (the bells ring in harmony) The Bell and Crown embossed on it are the emblem of the Crown Inn, a pub owned by the family of the vicar, so they were probably encouraged to fill up there frequently. That’s some clever 18th century embedded marketing.
