The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy wife and I were talking about our honeymoon this morning.
It left me feeling melancholy. Our honeymoon was in November of 2011 and I haven't had a proper vacation since then. I haven't taken any time off of work and I attended school for 2.5 years solid starting in May of 2012. Yeah, it's kind of sad when you think about it.
We were talking about where we went and the things we did on our honeymoon. We went to Tybee Island, Georgia and stayed at a bed and breakfast almost right on the beach. We did all of the things dastardly tourists do there. We went on a dolphin tour, visited a Civil War era Confederate fort, ate fresh seafood, and went on a guided tour of nearby Savannah. We also shopped, of course. The Occupy movement was going strong at the time and Savannah had a local movement.
We were very happy and completely unaware of the challenges that were coming. Indeed, the past three years have been some of the most challenging times of my life. They have also been the happiest...by far.
The highlight of our honeymoon for me was staying up at night and going to the beach. We were blessed with a full moon and clear weather and the moon would light up the night so bright that it would cast a shadow. There was a swing on the beach and we would sit there and talk under the moonlight, listening to the waves come in.
I love my wife so much.
I vow that this year we are going to make it back to Tybee Island and have a proper vacation. That's my New Year's resolution.

(22,897 posts)You're lucky to have her and vice versa. And I bet you do make it back to Tybee.

(36,827 posts)Even if they had no money they would throw a tent in the trunk and go to the coast for a week or so every year. The only improper vacation is the one you don't take. Of course virtually everyone in Europe has the luxury of being able to take vacation time which isn't always the case in the US.
