Our cat, Smokey, will be spending Christmas in the hospital.

We woke up this morning and noticed he had a bit of anal prolapse and he couldn't pass urine.
The vet was able to see him right away and as of 2:30p.m. they said he was acting better and passing urine through a catheter. The next 12-24 hrs. are the crucial ones.
From what I've read most cats bounce back pretty well if caught in time because a cats kidneys are over-engineered(?), over-sized(?). Something like that. I hope we did catch it in time.
The vet said this morning(9:30) that there is an 80/20% chance of him being ok. With the tentative good news this afternoon, they couldn't get an IV in him so they are doing subQ fluids but they say that shouldn't be a problem, I'm optimistic.
He didn't seem to be in any distress, except for not being able to pee, this morning so that gives me even more hope for a good recovery.
He may be in until Saturday.

He looks so solemn most of the time except when he's playing.

Or when there's a bare spot in the food bowl.

I don't remember if I've posted in the Lounge before.

That's how this Smokey got his name. Both have a white patch on their chest and the same look/color eyes.

Had Smokey the dog as a kid back in the late '60's, early'70'ss.

He was a great friend and companion growing up.

Thanks for the good wishes.

I talked to the vet at 10:30 this morning. They took the catheter out and the 'radar dish' collar off. Now the watch is on for how he pees without the catheter.

He's not eating much but that could just be because of all that's going on but he is eating some. He may not be eating because of the toxins built up in his system that need to be flushed out. They are still doing subQ fluids.

The vet seems to be pleased with his progress and I'm to call later this afternoon to see if he can come home on Sat. If he is urinating ok then he will probably come home.

Thanks for asking. I'll post again after I talk to the vet this afternoon or evening.

Yesterday wasn't quite the same without the whole family here.
