I've said that part of the reason the Bob Zemekis/Jim Carey "Christmas Carol" didn't do so well was that it is very dark and slavishly faithful to the original. Actually, it's a very good telling of the story, but if one want's "Christmas Carol" with a lighter touch, "Muppet Christmas Carol" is the way to go.....except.....

..when Kermit/Bob Cratchit delivers these lines:

It's all right, children. Life is made up of meetings and partings. That is the way of it. I am sure that we shall never forget Tiny Tim, or this first parting that there was among us.

and the tears really flow. There's something about Kermit's voice delivering that speech.

Watching it is a family holiday tradition, and sometimes we watch it at another time if year just because. It's both funny and touching, even inspiring. Michael Caine is terrific and there are some great Muppet one-liners. "Leave comedy to the bears!"

It was clearly an allusion to the passing of Jim Henson. It's a variance from a line from IIRC Nicolas Nikelby

treatments of the story around. Michael Caine is fantastic as Scrooge and anything that has Rizzo the Rat in it meets with my approval.

It's been so long since I saw it, it was great. Really stands the test of time.

and we did even before we had kids. Our kids also love the Carrey version as well... and yes, it is very close to the original work! Pretty dark and scary even in parts. But the Muppets, well, they'll always have a place in our Christmas viewing lineup. Really, quite wonderful!
