I have a troubled nephew age about 25. He likes history but mostly military stuff. He also thinks he's a fox news loving tough guy who makes fun of liberals and I'm sure he'd love Ayn Rand. His parents are mostly apolitical but I've worked on the kids and think they are more liberal. But not Rob. I do think that some of what he says is to get a rise out of me/us but I don't take the bait.
A book, a movie, something that might make him think about matters of the heart. Not love stuff but I hope to make him stop with the hate talk and become a bit empathetic.
I should add he just got out of a 5 year prison stint and is not likely to go to college but is smart enough to do it. He's very very sweet with all the younger kids in the extended family so I know he has it in him.
I am not sure he'd read a history book if it was a survey but might if it is more of a biography or about a time period. I also think he'd read something if I gave it to him (they love me in part, I think, because I call my self a godless commie pinko and they were raised in a religious household. But the religion didn't take with any of them. I'm sure its not about me but maybe a little bit?) So maybe that wonderful book about Martin Luther King about the bus strike (I can find the name). Or the movie about the guy who evesdropped for the Nazis and became a mailman because he found his humanity.
Help!

(38,613 posts)Half of them take place during WW2, there is an underdog looking out for the little guy, and there's a patriot that objects to fascism. There is definitely a lot of heart in them.
They're not some kind of eye-opening revelation, but they can inspire some interesting conversations with people once the issues have been taken out of their current context
