Thanksgiving is coming up, and it got me thinking about family. I'm single right now, so I don't have a story to tell here (unless you want to hear my last breakup story).
Anyhoo, how did everybody here end up finding their special someone??

(60,334 posts)It was a great way to meet girls, doors were locked at a certain hour and I knew how to get them open.

(60,334 posts)Most of them had seen me at the party earlier in the night. It all started with a couple of girls who couldn't get in and then became a thing, we would go open doors at the dorms after they were locked out. It was before key card systems and if you didn't make in in, you were out all night.
There were usually a couple of us doing it together, the girls started to know you and were happy to get in.
It was a matter of trust I suppose, small Midwestern trust.

(4,691 posts)But in 1996, I was doing the overnight shift on a local CHR station when she called in to request "Lady in Red" by Chris de Burgh. I asked her if she were the lady in red. It turned that she was a redhead, my personal kryptonite. She called back the next night. We talked for a few months before we met. We were together 11 years.

(3,208 posts)After we got together, we realized we had many more common friends and were surprised we had not met or knew of each other sooner. But, then again, I was pretty young so the timing was right just then!
We met in 1980 and got married in 86.

Neither of us wanted a blind date.
Our mutual friend was very clever.
Wish I could find her now.
I'd thank her.

Edited: Totally misread this question. I thought it asked how long have we've been together.
We met at a club.

Cute guy in the back seat asked my co-worker when he got back into the car "Who's the cute guy in the store?"
Introductions were made the next day.

Met a nice atheist liberal and we've been together 20 years. I never thought there was such a thing as the perfect match, but I found it.
My girlfriend there said, "Have you noticed ____'s pretty blue eyes?" and I said no, but I did check them out. He would have dated her first if she'd ever looked up from her shoes. He has blue eyes that are more the color of medium denim rather than light blue.
Of course we joke that we were both desperate for a date since neither of us had had a date in two or three years.
And we both had two prior divorces, which I refer to as, "We both had kids with people we can't stand."
My parents had a hilarious story. They met in a dive bar in a bad part of town, on the day that dad's divorce from his first wife was final, for extra comedic effect, in 1946. He had been fighting in the Air Force in Europe, helping them bomb Germany and Italy, and got home to find out he'd been sending home money to support his alcoholic wife and her alcoholic boyfriend, so that wouldn't do.

That was 1978. We've been married since January 1982.

(34,136 posts)It's more complicated than that - I'd met the fiancee on campus and we'd gotten together. He knew Mr. csziggy's wife from working in the same office as her sister. Later Mr. csziggy's wife divorced him, I'd broken up with the fiancee, shared a house with Mr. csziggy - it was completely platonic - worked in the same office as his first wife for a while and got to be good friends with her sister.
We've been married 37 years, will have been together for 39 years as of this coming Valentine's Day.

(60,014 posts)I was in grad school at Dartmouth - the nurses at the local Hitchcock hospital threw a party and invited the grad students. I was recently dumped and in no mood to attend. Walked in the door, was blown away by a girl drinking a beer - first person I looked at when I walked in, and I thought the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen (plus more - a goodness/kindness/depth about her - and I feel that way about her still, yet it is so much more than what I first caught on that initial look!). My mission was to speak to her, get to know her at some point.
Turns out she, coming off a long bad relationship, was dragged to same party by her friends.
We met in line for beer, talked, danced - she gave me her number. We had our first date a few weeks after the party. Party was on April 7, 1979. We got married on December 6 1980. Still each other's best friends, and about to celebrate our 34th anniversary!
