The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI've been all over the world, and there's always been Chinese food and pizza
I was thinking about this today, walking through my neighborhood. It's mostly Marathi, and they are pretty much all pure vegetarian except for some of the very old school castes of fisherman (though "vegetarian" in India often doesn't include fish or eggs).
On my block (a "block" is very big here -- a mile and a half or so) are four frankie stands (it's a kind of wrap, roughly a burrito), six pakora stands (fritters -- you know onion rings, I assume? they have those, plus similar snacks made with cauliflower, potato disks, sliced beets -- my favorite -- and okra), and two sandwich places. That's the "local" food. But against that there are by my count 14 Chinese restaurants, 9 pizza places, and two McDonalds's.
The pizza joints range from a dude with a flat-top grill and some capsicum (bell pepper) on a pita with cheese, through Dominos, to the best damn pizza I have had in my life outside of NYC or Italy, a place run by a Milanese dude. The Chinese places are all recognizably Chinese food, though they're heavier on rice offerings than American Chinese restaurants are.
I just also want to add that this is a very working-class section of Mumbai (we're pretty obviously the gentrifiers, taking over the abandoned mill space), not one of the posh neighborhoods like Bandra or Colaba (they have Starbucks every two blocks just like the US).
Anyways: that's been my experience in a lot of places: there's local food, there's pizza, and there's Chinese, pretty much anywhere in the world you go. Why is that? (I suppose "Chinese food and pizza are ****ing awesome, you idiot" is a fine answer...)

(70,197 posts)we also have some of the best indian food on the planet. way better than what we got in the tourist-y joints/hotels we ate in while we were there.
the only meal we had that could hold a candle to devon ave faire was in the cafeteria at cognizant. we were deeply disappointed that the official welcome meal was at the hard rock cafe.
we even had a guide take us to his cousins restaurant, and try to convince him to serve us something authentic. no go.
i blame chicago winters. some folks will do anything to get away from that. they have wandered far and wide.

(12,132 posts)always has at least one indian dish, usually chicken tiki masala (assuming that really is Indian and not some Englishification of an Indian dish like most American Chinese is).
And I usually get it because I'm tired of shepherd's pie lol.

(39,343 posts)Both in Rotterdam and Amsterdam they had the best ethnic food. Schwarmas and other 'Middle Eastern" regional food were all around. Sure here we have Mexican and Chinese on every corner, but there was unique, spicy food over in Holland. I miss it and hope to return, but I doubt it will ever happen.

(43,890 posts)Think what the world was like before the discovery of America, before Marco Polo.
Before pasta was brought to Italy.
Before tomatoes or peppers or potatoes or corn existed in the old continent.
Those baby corn in the Chinese dishes? what the hell?
Before tomatoes existed for that pizza sauce?
Before Tomatoes arrived from the new world and noodles from the orient, how could you make spaghetti in tomato sauce?
All food all food is fusion food now.
