We are just finding the "big" movies this year kind of....meh.

The Descendants, now Hugo. So so plots with lots of holes, some annoying acting (the faces the girl makes in Hugo....pretty much everyone but Clooney in Descendants)....once again we find ourselves lukewarm....we will try The Artist tomorrow.

I guess we are just a bit off movies right now (though we always enjoy going back to films like The Hours, Howard's End, Remains of the Day, Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine - great foreign films like Bread and Tulips, Antonia's Line, Mostly Martha, Babette's Feast)....

1. Can't wait to hear what you think of the artist. No spoilers here,

but I thought it was the best movie I have seen in a very, very long time.

And I was prejudiced against it before it started.

I hope you enjoy it.

Have you seen Iron Lady? I loved it.

The Help? Ok, but deeply flawed in some ways.

We have The Descendants and will probably watch tonight.

I loved Moneyball, but I am a huge baseball fan.

We are going to The Artist with midlevel expectations.

Looking forward to Iron Lady (Meryl Streep is just a treasure).

Didn't like The Help - my wife loved the book but thought the movie did a bad job.

I love baseball, so we will watch Moneyball at some point.

My favorite new release so far is Tree of Life - but it is not for everyone.

Midnight In Paris

I've read The Interrupters is a powerful overlooked documentary by the director of Hoop Dreams.

Margin Call made us (understandably) angry. Thanks for the other tips...into the Netflix queue they go!

15. Try not to miss the Special Features for these films. Very worthwhile for the majority.

Usually that requires a second Netflix disk, I've heard.

6. My wife and I - we tend to have pretty much spot on tastes.

My 30 year old daughter has separated from us on many movies - she used to like what we like, but not so much any more - which is to be expected. My 26 year old - no way! - she is a Transformers/Pirates of the Caribbean type of girl!

As for what's coming out, the new Star Trek and the third Batman movie are all that are on my radar.

The writing and acting were terrible. Every scene that should've had an emotional punch to it just died on the vine. The whole effort just seemed half-hearted. I did not know before watching it that it was about Melies and that just pissed me off. He deserves a better homage.

(Note to self: know synopsis of movies before going.) My husband went to sleep about five minutes in and it took me until the undraping of the Melies plot before I began to appreciate the movie. By the time my husband woke up, it was too late to convince him the movie was okay. Totally surprised it won five oscars.
