(29,414 posts)I know a lot of people dis this part, but I'd guess they also aren't putting themselves in Dave's place. Watch for the stills of the horrified looks as he tries to look away, but can't. His travel through that portal is mind-blowing in almost the literal sense for him. The music helps, though we the viewers can't really get into his mind for what he's really experiencing.

(49,990 posts)But a friend has it so sometime I'll get around to it.
My daughter is only 17. She'll get around to watching the rest of 2001 eventually. I hope.
She immediately recognized the beginning sequence because it was used in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

(29,414 posts)so I wasn't aware of their use of the first instance of the monolith. The rendering of the chocolate bar doesn't look that great, though, like they stopped just above the surface of the soil. It only looks okay when it's pulled out.
Also, I've never watched the remake of Solaris, but have seen the first one several times. I think I saw it at the Rice Media Center's theater before seeing it a couple of times on TCM later. If you don't mind slow-paced movies, then you might find it compelling (as I did.) If you can't sit for long times, trying to understand what the director is getting at, then it's not for you
