In 1925, Percy Fawcett set out to western Brazil to find the lost city of Z. He never returned. 100 rescuers from 13 expeditions have died trying to discover what became of him. It is still unknown. Good luck out there today. Try to use the buddy system.

Also to be a movie in 2015 (listed as in development, so who really knows), starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
I read the book, but it's been a while. I know that remnants of an ancient civilization were found, based on aerial maps and whatever else. But I don't recall if they determined what exactly happened to Fawcett.
