I think of that as so 1960's, early 1970's.

(12,132 posts)Grandma thought it was filthy to have a little girl say "penis" and she was done with Hollywood after that.
She did have a pretty good stash of Disney movies on VHS when she died though.
I've never seen Titanic. I don't expect I will.

(2,682 posts)But for good reason. I use a genealogy program for all my data. It's a 1997 version. They made a new version but instead of just up-grading it, they completely re-wrote it and I don't like it. So, if I ever change operating systems, I'll likely lose the genealogy program. Everything works just fine so I'm happy with the way things are.

(118,734 posts)be having transfered to the 2012 FamilyTree Maker soon. Now I'm scared it may not work. I asked a man a year ago and he said I should have no problem.

(2,682 posts)When my kids gave me the 2008 version, I noticed some major changes that I didn't like so I stayed with the old program. You shouldn't have any problems with your transfer, but be sure to have a complete backup on a disc or a thumb drive, just to be safe. And don't delete the old program until you are well assured that the new one works as you anticipated.
How's the research going? I've been doing this off and on for nearly 40 years. Sure keeps one out of the bars and off the streets.

(118,734 posts)I have yet to do that. I am paralysed because these are family records and Family Tree Maker will take my information and resell it. I will not give it away but one of the hundreds of people I give it too probably will press "Okay" when Ancestry.com prompts them. Then the people in the family will be paying for information until eternity. And I hate that because all the original information will be in the archives some day soon, and available for free. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and burn a whole bunch of cds (once I transfer it to FTM 2012, once I get a new computer, if my 2006 burner works on a 2012 computer, ).

(2,682 posts)I've been doing this for a long time and I have yet to define what "finished" is. I have over 8,000 names and associated data in FTM.
Yes, it was the issue of having to upload the data in order to put together a book that caused me to forgo updating the program. Like you, I also don't want to give it away. Some of the stuff I found before computers was discovered in person by taking trips and visiting graveyards, courthouses and libraries in places I would never have been otherwise. I worked too hard for that information to just give it to an organization that will charge people to look at it. I don't mind giving it away myself but giving Mormons money just isn't in my business plan.
My plan is to use the "book" feature of my old version of FTM, print four paper books; 1 for my sister in Australia, 1 for my daughter, 1 for the local library and 1 for the Seattle Public Library. Printing will be a huge undertaking -- I ran a sample book which showed over 900 pages of text. That would be over 500 pages a book.
But I'm not finished yet.

(118,734 posts)one branch of the family. I've finished that shared history for only that side of the family. And we are still in touch (3rd and 4th cousins) now. So I have to send it out now because future generations will not be in touch in the same way.
I did not know FTM had books. They did not have that in 2006. I look forward to it.

(2,682 posts)uses Ancestry Press which is a place you upload your data, configure it how you want, and then print it out or copy to a disc. In the 1997 version I have, there is no uploading involved -- it's all done through the program on my computer. The 2008 offers no other method but uploading the data. That's why I chose not to use it.
So, in the newer version, you can still wind up with an actual book, but you have to upload your data first.
BTW, if you already have the older version and you aren't contemplating doing more, why change to the 2012 version? Does it offer you some component that you prefer?

(118,734 posts)I may aswell modernize what I have and burn the 2012 version since that is the software some of them will be using. That way if somebody doesn't look at it or order the program for a few years I'm giving them an as up to date version as I can.

(5,356 posts)Presumably, freebie online games like Solitaire and Tetris don't count. The last actual 'game' I played was Pac-Man at a video parlor, circa 1981. Anything that involves a controller or joystick/whatever is enough to send me out of the room.

(33,688 posts)no Facebook or Twitter. I never text. No e-reader - I like BOOKS. I still listen to LPs through audio equipment that uses tubes. No computer audio, MP3s, HDTV. Haven't played a video game since I was a Ms. Pac-Man fan in college nearly 30 years ago.
The Intertubes and a cell phone are pretty much where I stopped following tech trends. Though I probably will put a wireless internet hub in my new place.

(18,497 posts)You can buy a whole canister of bread crumbs for the cost on those little packets. Then it's some spices. There's recipes online. Or just throw some stuff in there to your own taste.
The Star Wars thing is rather surprising. As much as that's been played you must have had an active avoidance. lol
