Currently the top two college football teams in the US are Mississippi and Mississippi State

At least per the ESPN power poll.

If you haven't caught an MSU game, you're missing one of the most amazing quarterbacks I've ever seen playing amazing football. Dak Prescott is a name you'll hear often in the future. They have a bye next week, but after that they're at Kentucky.

for the field to open up and swallow both teams.

Have 2 teams from the same state ever been rated 1-2 any week ever?

But I could very well be wrong.

on edit: I think there were a couple of instances in the 90s as well where FSU/UF/UM also may have shared the top two slots in some combination

has become a top quality program in recent years. The thing that caught them in the past was ranked opponents, paticulary those in the SEC but a top QB makes all the difference, especially in combination with a good defense.

Just ask Tim Tebow and just about every other College QB who has won the Heisman Trophy. Heck Charlie Ward won the Heisman as QB for Florida State and was smart enough to know that was the kiss of death for a College QB and he opted to play in the NBA>

If you are a very good college QB you're usually going to get drafted by a bottom-feeder and a lot of those usually have porous lines that get the QB killed early. I always thought Tim Couch would have had a longer career had he not been drafted by Cleveland.

Couch's tenure in Cleveland ranged from leading the team to a playoff appearance, to boos and inconsistent play, which was partially a result of being constantly plagued by injuries. These injuries were due, in turn, to his exposure to pressure due to the expansion Browns' inexperienced offensive line.
