The Blues is everywhere

What do we mean by the blues? Your answer will depend on the types of music you listen to.

If you go to blues clubs, you will expect to hear blue notes, which give the music a certain sweetness.

If you like 1960s rock, you may or may not hear the blues in this tune:

Bent notes, which are mandatory in delta blues and optional in rock, are rare in jazz. What a jazz aficionado calls the blues typically has the same chords, with some variations, as any other blues. Although most blues has mostly major chords, there is such a thing as a minor blues, e.g.:

Occasionally the 12 bar format is changed to 24 bars:

Awesome ragtime fingerpicked acoustic blues. Not as influential to rock as the delta blues style, but the alternating bass line is a clear influence on country & bluegrass guitar:

Etta Baker - One Dime Blues

Blind Blake - West Coast Blues

Rev Gary Davis - If I Had My Way

Mississippi John Hurt - My Creole Belle

I never heard the term "Piedmont Blues" before, although I've heard some of the musicians who play in that style.
Thank you for a thoughtful post.

I'm glad you enjoy the blues, including bent notes. They can be very expressive, and that's the whole point of playing music.

The Gary Moore tune you posted starts off like "The Blue Bossa", which is a jazz standard. It's not exactly the blues, but it's bluesy.

You can just feel the Blues from people who have truly 'been there'.

The Blues come across loud and clear with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

"Come and Go Blues" is a nice selection. It has elements of Blues, Rock, Country, and Jazz. Almost everyone can relate to this tune on some level.

Allman Brothers could have taken us if we had not lost Duane. Gregg is good but, together they were limitless. They did fusion like no other.
