six-penny, half-penny, half-a-crown, whatever else you had. The Brits changed from that old money
system to the decimal system in the 1970's, I think it was.
But what happened to all those old coins?

The British two shilling coin, also known as the florin or "two bob bit", was issued from 1849 until 1967. It was worth one tenth of a pound, or twenty-four old pence. It should not be confused with the medieval gold florin, which was nominally worth six shillings.
In 1968, in the run-up to decimalization, the two shilling coin was superseded by the decimal ten pence coin, which had the same value and initially the same size and weight. It continued in circulation, alongside the ten pence, until 1993, when the 10p was reduced in size.

3 tibbings to the squinchley. 5 1/2 squinchleys to the rotpot. 4 rotpots to the flippengammer.
Thank God for decimalization...

(27,247 posts)They're not worth a tinker's cuss as money anymore, although some may have marginal collector value.
And even the early versions of some New Pence coins (5p, 10p, 50p) which came out in the late '60s and were larger than the current coins, have also been demonetized. The early 5 new pence coin was the same size as the shilling it replaced, and the early 10 new pence coin was the same size as the florin it replaced.
