I refuse to see the need for the things for other than emergencies.
You want the web why browse on a tiny tablet -or better yet use a map & learn to memorize things-or write a list!
Dagnabit!
Anyhow-I got my wife one for emergencies but we never used it. The plan was a few months out of date. I have a long drive for a funeral so I decided to get the phone re-activated.
But nooooooo
They had de-activated the sim card-whatever that is. So they can reach out & damage my property by remote so I have to come begging back for a new simi whimi card ...Fark off
Ok-having had my tantrum I need some actual advice.
Is there a plan that gives me a minimum of minutes-no web or text/chat-and stays active for a year??
If not there should be...

(6,261 posts)You bring your own phone to the plan (has to be GSM, but if you have a SIM card, it is a GSM phone).
Put a hundred dollars on your account and it won't expire for a year.
I cancelled our subscription model with dataplan a couple of years ago and went this route. I've been very happy with it. 10 cents a minute and 10 cents per message, but I don't use up anywhere near a hundred dollars a year.

(7,113 posts)It's simple, cheap, and reliable.
You can roll over unused minutes, as long as you don't let the plan lapse, and that's easy to avoid by signing up for the auto annual payment.
I've had it for almost 9 years without a single glitch or complication.

(13,039 posts)No Web - However, It will probably include texting regardless.

(8,976 posts)As shown....I have this model. You can buy airtime cards almost anywhere. I finally went with an automatic payment plan that cost $13 including taxes per month which adds 30 days of service and 200 minutes of talk time which rolls over.I know it's Walmart but if I lose my phone I'm only out $20.

(32,086 posts)I have been seeing their older model phones dirt cheap. The flip phones are the least expensive. I got my LG 900G, which is a full keyboard model, a few years ago for about $35. Target had them for $15 recently. Grocery stores often have the best deals on Net10 phones.

(4,299 posts)An old plan but they probably still have similar.
No frills flip phone (answer on flip option, no struggle for a button)
$7.50/month auto-charged quarterly
Unlimited voice U.S.
$3/text (free with other Virgin users)
$5/picture
They've been good to me for years.

(26,117 posts)...and my last phone from them was a $14 flip phone that didn't even have a camera. I think I was spending about $8/month for the service.
And Jitterbug is marketed toward users of a certain age.
Plans from $14.99/month
No long term contract
Easy to see
Simple to use

(30,947 posts)That's the phone I use. The monthly fee is only $22 a month. I am retired and home most of the time so I usually use my land line. I only use the cell phone for emergencies or when I am driving.

(6,336 posts)You pay by the minute (you buy cards for airtime similar to calling cards).
Use it once a month (even to call your landline) to keep it activated.

(41,694 posts)Cost me $15. Mine makes calls, receives calls. Does text but I don't use that. 400 minute airtime card was a $110 with double minutes bonus and time is good for a year. Any minutes still on when you renew roll over.
worked every place I've been in and out of town.

(2,533 posts)And I found after I posted & went phone shopping Y'all are correct-they are the cheapest. Still no bargain IMHO...
But what got my goat is that I could not just buy more airtime-they had killed my phone.
In my understanding of personal property that is not legal. So this whole being able to damage my personal property (phone) by disabling the unit is just plain wrong.
I'm going to drive just as I always have -without a cell phone. And I'd wager if I had a problem I could find someone who did have one.

(54,256 posts)We never use the 200 minutes.
I don't need to text, face, twit, whatever.
I just want to make a phone call when I NEED to.
Period.

(54,256 posts)We keep the cellphones in each car because that's the only place we'll really need them.
Got the chargers that plug into what used to be the cigarette lighter.
They came with the phones.
I guess they call them 'power outlets' now.

(2,533 posts)I was told the sim card would take 3-5 days to arrive & I asked them to expedite if possible. I was told they could only promise 3-5 days so I was fairly certain it would not arrive in time.
We got a envelope to the door this AM with the Sim card. I pre-paid a full year & good to go.
If I was not driving a elderly VW van and have my own "maintenance" issues I'd likely not bother.
But wife is happier so its worth it right there
But I was a wee bit of a douche when I called them to find out why my phone could not be re-activated online. And they did the right thing & sent the Sim by priority mailer so I got it on time.
Good to see actual customer service despite my grumpy behavior.
Cheers!

(16,926 posts)I got mine for $14.95 at Best Buy last year. It has voice dialing, text, email, a (low-quality) camera and you can use Bluetooth headphones to listen to tunes if you want. In other words, 90% of what the outrageously expensive phones are used for. Tracphone, with double minutes.
Pretty smart.
