Russian Cosmonaut Slaps Down Reporters Asking About Her Hair And Makeup

"Can you tell me more about your everyday life on the station? For example, how are you planning to do your hair?" one reporter asked.

Serova shot back with an indignant response.

"Can I ask a question, too?" she replied. "Aren't you interested in the hairstyles of my colleagues?"

and expected- anyone who willingly straps themselves into a rocket (which could possibly blow up) has enough backbone not to take peoples shit.

I recently finished a couple of books discussing the Apollo program, and the more I learn the more insane I realize it is. These rockets contain an enormous amount of energy, and every flight is a risk. If you get on one, you have a heck of a lot of courage.

(or perhaps it was Gemini, but it doesn't matter) who said something to the effect that when the vehicle was launched, he was sitting on top of a bomb, built by the lowest bidder on a government contract and the next nearest person was 3 miles away!

on top of a gigantic firecracker waiting to happen (made by the lowest bidder), sent into a hostile environment which can kill you in less than 10 seconds ... yeah, she's really concerned about her hair.

there were very nearly NO successful launches prior to Shepard's first flight into the borders of space. Numerous boosters had exploded on launch or otherwise crashed.

That took some intestinal fortitude. That's why all of the initial astronauts were test pilots. They were used to flying vehicles that hadn't been off the ground yet.

The early space programs were incredible. I think that's my favorite part of NASA history.

although I've always kind of wondered why female astronauts don't crop their hair close for convenience.

Their choice, of course.
