Johnny Cash is THE greatest recording artist EVER! SO many great songs. And he sang multiple genres: country, rock, rockabilly, pop, bluegrass, folk, blues, and gospel! Very versatile. Who else is a fan?

(27,247 posts)from an area of the state which was particularly hit hard during the Depression. He grew up in the so-called "Dyess Colony", which is described by Arkansas State University as follows:
"The Dyess Colony was created in 1934 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal to aid in the nations economic recovery from the Great Depression. As a federal agricultural resettlement community, it provided a fresh start for nearly 500 impoverished Arkansas farm families, including the family of music legend Johnny Cash. The colony is being resurrected through restoration of several historic buildings that will be open to visitors."
Growing up among hundreds of impoverished farm families no doubt had a profound effect on his music.
And his boyhood home has recently been opened to the public:

(4,138 posts)Unmistakable voice, and it's hard to imagine rock and country guitar playing without the boom-chicka rhythm style that his early band pioneered.
He also seems to be the standard exception for the "I hate country music" crowd.

(56,582 posts)What he doesn't mention is that he was stoned off of his ass and buck-naked. And that the police knew damn well who he was and were putting him in jail to keep the story out of the papers.
But, yeah, an amazing artist.

(3,051 posts)Johnny Cash sang a song, "hurt" that was deeply haunting and fantastic. I was listening to it and my very grungy (and oddly conservative for a young kid and a Jewish kid --- blame his engineering degree, but that's another post) grandson popped in and told me it was a "Nine Inch Nails" song.
