Did You Watch Any Movies this Weekend?

I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel, Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story and Ginger & Rosa.

I liked TGBH, it's different, charming and funny verging on slapstick but more surreal comedy than anything else. The cast was great, I wasn't expecting to see so many big names. It got a little tedious at around the middle end part but I'm glad I watched it, cool movie.

Ginger & Rosa was a real downer. It's the kind of movie I usually love(60's, politics) but this one just missed the mark somehow. Elle Fanning's mess of a dye job distracted me the whole time, and just I don't know. The story was too specific and depressing, and not enough fashion or history or scenery to draw me in. I don't know if I've seen Elle Fanning in anything before, it may just be that she's not a very good actress. I don't know, I just didn't like the movie at all.

The Tomi Ungerer Story was really great, very interesting all around. I think a lot of DUers might like it a lot.

It reinforces stereotypes. It says that if a man likes musicals and has other interests that aren't macho, then of course he's gay but doesn't know it yet.

That's just nonsense. It's as stupid as saying that a girl who likes sports is a lesbian and doesn't know it.

I wonder how many boys who are straight but happen to like the arts and not like sports were beaten up by knuckle-draggers who saw the movie.

There's nothing wrong with being gay, of course, but don't we have enough boys who think they have to be interested only in sports and gaming to be considered really masculine?

Here's the ending I would have liked to see:

He turns out to be straight, he chides the students and the community for stereotyping, he marries his fiancee, and she is the happiest woman in town because he doesn't grumble when she wants him to go to the opera with her.

and while the ending you would have liked is really hysterical (i laughed out loud when i read it to a friend of mine who happens to be a gay film critic) i'm not sure how it would have come off on the big screen

while i understand what you're saying i think the the writer, paul rudnick, did a great job with this movie. (and to quote a line from the film: "and he's gay.&quot

all time favorites. I saw it on the big screen when it first came out (1997) and watched it again several times in the next decade. There are so many elements to this film - one that struck me is that growing up in the Midwest and having moved to SoCal in the mid '80's, one of the first things I noticed was a difference in the natural "daylight". Hard to discern, but it just seemed a little faded. This came through to me in the film, the cinematography IMHO captured this.

Fast forward to last year. I was on a return flight from Europe and flying business class. It's 11pm and I'm all stretched out in one of those wonderful "pods", just had a reasonably good meal considering it's an airplane, and the wine was flowing. This particular flight - and I've not experienced this on any others - had an AMAZING list of films from which to choose, hundreds of them, to the point where I was fantasizing that the plane would somehow be diverted for 24 hours and I could spend my time watching movies. I mean they had Casablanca, GWTW, Chinatown, and many more of the same quality.

But I chose to watch again LA Confidential and was once again blown away. I followed this with American Graffiti and I have to say that although the trip was fantastic, this really put it over the edge.

The more the girl tries to make everything work out like the Pride and Pejudice story the more she bungles it up. Just seeing her trying to fit into that world is hilarious. Not to mention just her coming to grips with there being a magic door through her bathroom that goes into that world.

Enjoy. I've watched it several times, and it's just as funny each time.

It's a fine example of British TV using non-glamorous, flawed main characters. Vera (played by Brenda Blethyn of "Secrets and Lies&quot is late middle-aged and frumpy, drinks too much, and is kind of a loner. I cannot imagine an American series with kind of a lead character.
