I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel, Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story and Ginger & Rosa.
I liked TGBH, it's different, charming and funny verging on slapstick but more surreal comedy than anything else. The cast was great, I wasn't expecting to see so many big names. It got a little tedious at around the middle end part but I'm glad I watched it, cool movie.
Ginger & Rosa was a real downer. It's the kind of movie I usually love(60's, politics) but this one just missed the mark somehow. Elle Fanning's mess of a dye job distracted me the whole time, and just I don't know. The story was too specific and depressing, and not enough fashion or history or scenery to draw me in. I don't know if I've seen Elle Fanning in anything before, it may just be that she's not a very good actress. I don't know, I just didn't like the movie at all.
The Tomi Ungerer Story was really great, very interesting all around. I think a lot of DUers might like it a lot.
Did you see anything over the weekend?

(8,217 posts)About an Indian family who moved to France, and the one chef who learned how to cook to get a star.
Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)I've seen the commercial/trailer for that, it sounds like a good movie. Did you like it?
Xyzse
(8,217 posts)Well, then again, I tend to like movies about food, dancing and action.

(10,952 posts)It made me want to hop a plane to France. Great story, Great cast. Great chemistry between the characters.
That's what attracted me to it, that it was set it in France. It looks great, I'll have to watch it soon~

(48,217 posts)It reinforces stereotypes. It says that if a man likes musicals and has other interests that aren't macho, then of course he's gay but doesn't know it yet.
That's just nonsense. It's as stupid as saying that a girl who likes sports is a lesbian and doesn't know it.
I wonder how many boys who are straight but happen to like the arts and not like sports were beaten up by knuckle-draggers who saw the movie.
There's nothing wrong with being gay, of course, but don't we have enough boys who think they have to be interested only in sports and gaming to be considered really masculine?
Here's the ending I would have liked to see:
He turns out to be straight, he chides the students and the community for stereotyping, he marries his fiancee, and she is the happiest woman in town because he doesn't grumble when she wants him to go to the opera with her.

(34,060 posts)in & out is a comedy
and while the ending you would have liked is really hysterical (i laughed out loud when i read it to a friend of mine who happens to be a gay film critic) i'm not sure how it would have come off on the big screen
while i understand what you're saying i think the the writer, paul rudnick, did a great job with this movie. (and to quote a line from the film: "and he's gay."

(1,712 posts)all time favorites. I saw it on the big screen when it first came out (1997) and watched it again several times in the next decade. There are so many elements to this film - one that struck me is that growing up in the Midwest and having moved to SoCal in the mid '80's, one of the first things I noticed was a difference in the natural "daylight". Hard to discern, but it just seemed a little faded. This came through to me in the film, the cinematography IMHO captured this.
Fast forward to last year. I was on a return flight from Europe and flying business class. It's 11pm and I'm all stretched out in one of those wonderful "pods", just had a reasonably good meal considering it's an airplane, and the wine was flowing. This particular flight - and I've not experienced this on any others - had an AMAZING list of films from which to choose, hundreds of them, to the point where I was fantasizing that the plane would somehow be diverted for 24 hours and I could spend my time watching movies. I mean they had Casablanca, GWTW, Chinatown, and many more of the same quality.
But I chose to watch again LA Confidential and was once again blown away. I followed this with American Graffiti and I have to say that although the trip was fantastic, this really put it over the edge.

(130,974 posts)and as I don't enjoy slapstick, I didn't enjoy the movie.
Saw 100 Foot Journey, and liked it a lot.
Saw 12 Years a Slave (on TV, after seeing it before,) and tho can't say 'enjoyed' it, its a fine movie.
Saw Saving Mr. Banks, and liked it.
Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)12 years, yeah. Excellent movie, hard to watch but still. I haven't seen Mr. Banks- I seem to remember there being some controversy surrounding that movie...

(130,974 posts)but Banks was on DirecTV so I watched it. Can't NOT watch that cast.

(12,723 posts)P.L. Travers despised what Disney did with her book so much that she left it in her will that no american could ever again make a version of Mary Poppins. She hated animation and she hated the songs.

(4,465 posts)Ok. I don't know enough to comment one way or another really, but I do know that Mary Poppins is a great American Classic. I'm surprised to hear she hated it.
Good to know.

I recorded "12 Years a Slave" for future viewing. I read the book and the movie appears to accurately depict it, from what I've seen.
I enjoyed "The Grand Budapest Hotel". I thought it was cute and funny. My friend hated it and walked out of the theater! LOL
Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)I can see someone walking out, mad. It did get a little eye roll inducing during the middle but the two lead characters were really great. And just the whole look of the movie was cool. Yeah it was pointless but whatever, it's unique. I liked it.

(11,065 posts)Seen it before, but it's hilarious. You really need to know the story of Pride and Prejudice to really understand or really appreciate it.
Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)I will definitely be watching that ASAP.
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)The more the girl tries to make everything work out like the Pride and Pejudice story the more she bungles it up. Just seeing her trying to fit into that world is hilarious. Not to mention just her coming to grips with there being a magic door through her bathroom that goes into that world.
Enjoy. I've watched it several times, and it's just as funny each time.
On Edit: oooo! someone put the whole thing on YouTube...

(4,465 posts)How fun, this will make up for the waste of time that was Ginger & Rosa. Thank you!

(4,465 posts)I would watch another three hours of Elizabeth's side of the story in modern day! Anyway, thanks again, that was really great.
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)I've often wished that the story kept going. It also would have been great to show Elizabeth trying to get on in modern London. Now you'll be checking your bathtub all the time and disappointed that you don't have a magic wall, too.

It's a fine example of British TV using non-glamorous, flawed main characters. Vera (played by Brenda Blethyn of "Secrets and Lies" is late middle-aged and frumpy, drinks too much, and is kind of a loner. I cannot imagine an American series with kind of a lead character.

(14,275 posts)I was out fishing until the last light of the day during the entire weekend. Fishing the Mississippi, one of the great rivers of the world, beats watching movies. This weekend when it gets colder I will do some movie binge watching.

(4,465 posts)I don't fish but I do love the outdoors so, I can appreciate your reasoning there. I've been trying to enjoy every minute of these last days of warmth too, but I was under threat of thunder storms all weekend so! I took the opportunity to knock some movies off my list.

(53,235 posts)From the So Bad It's Good category. Watched it on Warner Archives. A real train wreck of a film.
Lana Turner going mad. Acid trips. Dialogue like this:
Johnny Allen: [Putting his arm around her] Do you know you really turn me on?
Girl sketching model: [Disinterested] Since when?
Johnny Allen: Since now. I belong to 'The Now Generation.'
