The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just had to have our dog Swifty put down.
Swifty and I had a good day today. We ate and listened to the ball game. He lounged on his doggy bed. At about nine tonight I put him up on the bed with me and we went to sleep. I awoke a little over an hour later to him having a grand mal seizure.
I called the emergency veterinarian and rushed him out there. It was a twenty minute drive and then I had to wait for the doctor to get there five minutes later. Swifty never recovered consciousness.
This hurts me, but it hurts my wife immeasurably more. She is on vacation and I had to call her with the news. With his love and loyalty, Swifty helped my wife get through some hard times before she met me. She is devastated.
I think Swifty might have been the most loved dog on the planet. He was definitely the most loved dog in our town. A lot of people knew Swifty from the no-kill shelter where my wife adopted him. He was memorable particularly because he was missing a leg and also for his love of people. We made a lot of appearances at the shelter with Swifty.
I cried tonight for the first time in years.

(6,011 posts)Please tell Jen she's in my thoughts! I remember that you wrote about Swifty and I was glad that Jen came with a dog after you said you might get a dog as a trucking companion.
A similar thing happened to my husband and me years ago. We left our two dogs together in a nice kennel for a few days while I accompanied hubby to Portland with a van of stuff he was installing there. The trip took a bit longer than projected, and when I called the kennel to make sure our dogs could stay another night, the owner told me our old dog Brindle had a seizure and they had to take him to the vet. When we got home I went to the vet's office and she said Brindle wasn't responding to phenobarbital, and had more seizures, so the only thing to do was let the doctor put him to sleep.
I'm glad you and Swifty had a good day before this happened, and most of all that he and you and Jen experienced being together as a family.

I do know what you're going through. Your hearts are breaking. Please, please know that you did all you could, so have peace of mind that you were there for Swifty all of the way.
He will have a special place in your and your wife's hearts forever.

(10,418 posts)I just wanted to clarify something. When I got Swifty to the vet, the doctor gave him a shot that ended the seizure and put him on oxygen, but then after looking him over said he would never recover and I should put him down. He had been without enough oxygen for too long and he had a fever of 109.
Swifty had seemed to be experiencing mental difficulty for a little while now. He would bark in the house while we were there and exhibited another odd behavior. We just chalked it up to him getting old. We think he was about 15. We didn't know his exact age, but my wife got him 9 years and the vet estimated his age at 5 or 6 at the time. The vet says he may have had a brain tumor.
I'm glad I was here with him when it happened. We are not with him while we are at work and I'd hate to think of him dying naturally from what happened to him. It might have taken hours. But I don't think he ever realized what hit him.
You all helped me get a good cry out this morning. I managed to get a little bit of sleep last night, but when I awoke this morning it was like coming into a bad dream.

Dogs never die. They dont know how to. They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they dont die. If they did they would not want to always go for a walk, even long after their old bones say: No, no, not a good idea. Lets not go for a walk. Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk. They might get one step before their aging tendons collapse them into a heap on the floor, but thats what dogs are. They walk.
Its not that they dislike your company. On the contrary, a walk with you is all there is. Their boss, and the cacaphonic symphony of odor that the world is. Cat poop, another dogs mark, a rotting chicken bone ( exultation), and you. Thats what makes their world perfect, and in a perfect world death has no place.
However, dogs get very very sleepy. Thats the thing, you see. They dont teach you that at the fancy university where they explain about quarks, gluons, and Keynesian economics. They know so much they forget that dogs never die. Its a shame, really. Dogs have so much to offer and people just talk a lot.
When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and thats why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. Thats when they say: Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.
When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and thats why, of course, you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap. After a while they sleep more. (remember, a dog while is not a human while. You take your dog for walk, its a day full of adventure in an hour. Then you come home and its a week, well one of your days, but a week, really, before the dog gets another walk. No WONDER they love walks.)
Anyway, like I was saying, they fall asleep in your heart, and when they wake up, they wag their tail. After a few dog years, they sleep for longer naps, and you would too. They were a GOOD DOG all their life, and you both know it. It gets tiring being a good dog all the time, particularly when you get old and your bones hurt and you fall on your face and dont want to go outside to pee when it is raining but do anyway, because you are a good dog. So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.
But dont get fooled. They are not dead. Theres no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when youre not expecting it. Its just who they are.
I feel sorry for people who dont have dogs sleeping in their heart. Youve missed so much. Excuse me, I have to go cry now

(41 posts)He was delightful, loving, and such an amazing companion for 13 years. It's so hard. I see him everywhere in the house, the yard, even at work where he'd come along with me a few time every semester. The students loved him, reminding them of their own pets at home. He knew when we were sad or sick, sticking with us as we healed. If only he could have been healed. I feel like we let him down. I held him to the end, kissing him And telling him how much I loved him.
How can our home be so empty with the loss of a 15 lb dog? My heart has never felt so much pain.
I am sending you soft and kind thoughts. Namaste
