The Rolling Stones appreciation thread

As Tears Go By and Far Away Eyes are some of the best songs ever! The Stones KICK ASS! No wonder they are so influential! They're some of my favorite musicians along with Johnny Cash and Green Day. Any other Stones lovers here?

2. It was the Stones that got me into blues all those years ago.

I looked at the song writers on their first album and they included Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry and Willie Dixon. So I started listening to those guys. That led to other blues artists and I've been a big blues fan ever since.
So yeah, I appreciate the Stones and the other English bands that were part of the "British Blues Invasion" of the 60's,

The Bridges to Babylon and Voodoo Lounge tours. My favorite Stones songs - Sympathy for the Devil, Jumpin' Jack Flash, You Can't Always Get What You Want, and Angie.

since 1980 (I think that's 6 times) except the most recent because they didn't perform anywhere near my city. I once scored front row seats. Keith Richards made eye contact with me and my reaction must have been hilarious because he burst out laughing.

The subsequent incarnation is some kind of lucrative tribute act.

Today - Hell No!

Maybe if they had retired 30 years ago instead of putting out subpar albums and touring based on their legend from the 60s & 70s I'd still be into them. Sure if the Stones toured again they'd sell out and make alot of money but they're seeing some watered down commercialized family-friendly version of the Stones - a far cry from the amazing tours they did in their early years. But it's that legend that sells the tickets.

And heres the thing. What if instead of retiring the band, groups like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles kept touring again and again and again putting out sub-par records. I know - could these bands have put out sub-par records especially the Beatles. I know LZ started to peak at Physical Graffiti but even their records after Graffiti were still great albums but not legendary ones. And the Beatles never really peaked with albums. I think they stopped the band on top. But both bands just stopped the band altogether and even though the fans screamed for reunion tours the band members for the most part have refused especially the Beatles.

And perhaps that is why I think more of Led Zeppelin and The Beatles then I do of The Rolling Stones. I think at some point a band has to realize they are putting out crap and perhaps walk away for awhile. That doesn't mean all band are like that. A few like U2 and Bruce Springsteen have managed to put out amazing stuff time and time again (although both have had a few clunkers).

So there is my 2 cents.

The Stones, 35 years after they first played "Miss You"... not bad!

Masonic Hall in Detroit, opera house set-up, only about 4,000 seats. No fancy stage set.

They kicked ass from beginning to end. Great live.

I think they are the very best rhythm band in rock, the way they all play together. They were obviously best in the Mick Taylor incarnation, and with Brian Jones preceding that.

The Stones had many of the greatest rock classics. They also had much mediocre material in later years.

But as they say, It's only rock 'n roll and I like it, like it, yes I do.
