(14,549 posts)I use Ink Jet Superstore -- compatibles for $3 each and they have more ink in them than the manufacturers cartridges.
Also set your print driver one notch below regular. Sometimes this is called "fast" or "draft" ; it uses less ink by 30% to 50%.

(55,019 posts)the suckingest print heads on the fucking planet
with epson you MUST print something every few days or the heads dry up and NOTHING will fix them
I really like my old cannon pixma - works whenever I need it and even when it tells me it is out of ink I can hit cancel and then try again and it always works then - and it never needs cleaning cycles like the fucking epson - using half the ink ans STILL no printing right
I bet if you really need the waterproof ink on occasion, it would be worth to just buy a new printer every time - letting an epson sit will not work.

(43,049 posts)that printhead crapped out within weeks. Some cheap plastic part just kinda fell off the back, too.
However, my Epson Workforce 1100 wide carriage printer has worked very well for over a year, even though I might go for weeks without printing anything and I have dropped keys and small change into its huge maw. It does use vast amounts of ink when I print out a mural, though.
I do know a guy who has discovered that you can often buy a new printer for less than the cost of replacement cartridges (laser or inkjet) and does just that every time the printer goes dry. In fact, I just bought a Brother laser printer for 60 bucks. It replaces the one I broke a while back, and I remember replacement cartridges for it were 65 bucks.

(34,137 posts)Seriously, that is one of the most common problems!
Try checking repair kits for your model here: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/
They sell a special Epson cleaning solution for cleaning the printerheads.
Or check in their forums - lots of great suggestions there.

Either that or it's a thermal printer and you didn't use thermal paper.

(95,337 posts)That's how the printer companies would get folks.
They'd offer these cheapass printers for like $50 and then make the replacement cartridges like $60 each.
When I found it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the cartridges that's what I did. And I got one where the replacement cartridges are less than $20.

I had one of those big heavy HP printers for years that cost me $1600. It was a real workhorse.
Now I have one of those HP all in one scan and print and copy things.
