The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumsi have purged three garbage bags of clothes so far today
the nice stuff goes to the safe house as i'm sure they can use interview clothes, the regular stuff goes to the thrift store and the ratty shit will be dropped off for recycling.
i am boggled by how much clothing i have accumulated.

(112,421 posts)I donated about three bags of clothing to the Red Cross--mostly long sleeve shirts that can be used by someone for a professional job. I probably have another bag or two that I can clear out though. I held onto one group of shirts though in case I return back to the job market.

(24,146 posts)but considering i haven't worn that stuff in five or more years, it was time to part with it.

(53,339 posts)The ratty shit is my whole wardrobe. No one has ever accused me of being a fashion plate.

(24,146 posts)but the recycle stuff was just unwearably ratty. i can't wear jeans blown out in the crotch.

(4,033 posts)were likely over and my size 12 days were finally here. Last Labor Day weekend, I cleared out my closet of all the clothing I had that ranged from 18W to 22W. I think that I somehow felt that I might return to those sizes agains. But after one year where I had settled into the smaller sizes (weight loss of 100 lbs.) I began to believe in myself and that I would not return to those larger sizes.
I donated it all to my local St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. It was all great brands, LL Bean and Macy's clothing, both professional and leisure attire. I hope that it helped someone in need.

(22,000 posts)I hadn't cleaned out my closet since we moved into the house we are in 3 1/2. By the time I was finished I had filled a Costco bag. Then I went and bought my new clothes.

(24,146 posts)my sister cleaned out her clothes, too, and found a few pairs of pants that fit me.

(22,000 posts)Many of my clothes were worn out or didn't fit. I found one shirt that I never wore to give away to a co-worker who is big and tall like I am. Finding clothes here in Korea is difficult so when I go home, I bring everything back with me. Usually I go every two years, but it had been three years since my last trip.
BTW I like your sig line. I grew up in Oregon and as I mentioned just visited there. I was in Astoria about four weeks ago. Didn't go by the Goonies house, but stopped at the maritime museum and had dinner at a place on the Columbia River.

(24,146 posts)we went by the goonies house and had lunch on cannon beach last time i visited. there's a picture of me in front of haystack rock somewhere.

(3,995 posts)We purge the whole house once in the summer and again right before Christmas. The rule is, if you don't love it and you haven't worn or used it in the past year, it goes to charity (with reasonable exceptions). I'm always amazed at how much stuff we accumulate.

(24,146 posts)i hadn't done my wardrobe in years.

(6,011 posts)I used to think Goodwill sorted out and sent unsaleable stuff to a recycle place which chopped up clothing and other cloth stuff for use as insulation, car trunk lining pads, etc. Then a long time ago someone on DU said she worked at a Goodwill, or a similar place where people donate stuff, and said, "Please don't donate worn out stuff with holes, etc." I know some people buy new jeans with worn spots and rips, but I feel bad donating ratty stuff as if someone would buy it.
When I look at clothes in stores sometimes I find things that have come back in style after twenty or thirty years, and I still have the original .

(24,146 posts)and we need to make a run there anyway.
