I'm pretty excited - I got a job after not working for 17 years. I was a stay at home mom until my divorce and then went back to school full time. I just finished my coursework and will graduate this fall. This was my first interview - and I got the job! It helped that I knew someone that worked there. I've always been really lucky like that.
I will say I also live in an area where jobs are plentiful, so I'm thankful about that. This job doesn't pay very well compared to similar jobs, but generally promotes people quite quickly. My new boss has only been there a couple of years. And I get a really good employee discount
I'm worried about being a working single parent, as now there will never be enough time on my hands (school was really flexible with hours and this new job isn't) but happy I was able to get a job so quickly.
I hope everyone looking for work has success soon too. I'm sending positive thoughts to all of you. Much love to everyone at DU...I won't be around as much anymore, but thank you for being my 'morning news' for the last 10+ years

(35,015 posts)Don't worry about being a working single mom - I raised 3 girls and they all turned out to be awesome women! You've got new horizons ahead of you and you're excited about it - you'll do great and your kids will be very proud of their mom.

(8,646 posts)I have 4 girls...my youngest is quite upset about the new job...it means I won't be around as much and she's been very needy lately. I'm sure she'll get used to it once school starts back up again.

I've only been hired without networking once (out of 6 jobs I've had). That job I had to beat out 100 applicants...I was a nervous wreck in the interview. But I interview well, so I got that job.
I think interviewing skills are extremely important too - almost more so than networking. For this interview, even though I knew someone in the company and they gave me a good reference, I still studied the company, their financials, read the news stories about the company, practiced common interview questions, etc. I'm good at selling my skills and people have told me I'm engaging so that is just luck, I never practiced that, LOL. It's probably why I've never not gotten a job I've interviewed for. Yes, I'm very very lucky.
