Maundy Thursday

The day before Good Friday is Maundy Thursday. The kings of England long practiced the custom of washing the feet of poor men in a number equal to the years of their reign on that day. James II was the last king to perform this office. The maund was the basket or hamper of victuals given to the poor. Of late, it has been the fashion to dress in one's best clothes and ape the stations of the cross in a religious display on this day.
