The Holly Boy and The Ivy Girl

It was the custom in an obscure English village for the girls to steal the Holly Boy, an effigy built out of holly by the boys, and burn it in their part of the village to cheers and huzzahs. While in another part of the village the boys incinerate the Ivy Girl, an effigy built by the girls and stolen from them. When the elders of the village were asked about this custom they could only answer that it had always been a sport at that time of year.
