(12,723 posts)I saw the first one in a theater in 77. It was OK but not that great. The next one really is a great film. All the rest add up to a bunch of noise and loud bangs, racist characterizations, and third-grade level philosophy.
I do not expect to view these new efforts. it is fucking Disney's now.

(63,215 posts)I'm not bothered by part of the film taking place on Tattooine. After all, how many books, plays and movies have been set in Japan, the UK or the US?
Since Luke apparently factors into the story, this suggests that he might have "retired" to his home planet of Tattooine.

(37,748 posts)I'm cautiously optimistic. I think Abrams is a good story-teller, and is being supplied with a mythos ripe for plot expansion.

(38,317 posts)But he mangled Star Trek beyond recognition. The only thing that could fix Abram's Star Trek universe is flushing it down some time vortex and starting again.

(37,748 posts)I enjoyed the newer Trek films more than any of the previous films. Was kinda nice watching an action/adventure movie without the hackneyed morality plays being thrown about like dead trout...

(38,317 posts)It was something new and progressive.
"Lost in Space" was "hackneyed."
I was disappointed that Abram's Star Trek films didn't push the goal further. It was just early 21st century CGI action crap.
Even Star Trek: Enterprise with it's sappy, folksy title song did better.

(39,343 posts)I think what made the first three fun was that they needed imagination to build the sets and creatures. Today everything can be computer generated by a guy in a basement somewhere. Where's the fun in that?
