Was The Scarlet Pimpernel the inspiration for this song? The hero of that story, Sir Percy, pretends to be the quintessential effeminate follower of 18th century English fashion. While chatting about the exploits of the secretive Scarlet Pimpernel to some society girls, Sir Percy recites this ditty:

They seek him here, they seek him there
Those Frenchies seek him *everywhere*
