I just remember from my step-dad saying it when we were kids. He is a child of the 50s.

My Mom used to say she punctured each bean with a needle before soaking them.
"It lets the gas escape." she said.

were young children and the family had baked beans (they were from Boston environs) her mom would give each kid about 6 beans, and a toothpick. "Beans are hard to digest", she'd tell them, and they'd savor each molassesy bean.

I taught this to my then 7-year-old nephew which he appreciated, but his parents and grandparents did not.
