If you don't remember my daughter's dilemma, you can get the background here: http://www.gofundme.com/7y46uk.
She has been trying to get her family back together. She is here with us and her husband is in Crimea. As you recall, she got out just before the Russians took over the airport in Simferopol . The original plan was for Maks to follow with a visitor's visa. That's not happening.
Finally a breakthrough - maybe
Lori and Maks were both going to teach at an elementary school in Chori Buri, Thailand.
There are still a few things to work out, but both can get there and they can be together and he can apply for a US visa from there.
Lori was to leave this weekend and they were planning to meet there - it is a town about an hour south of Bangkok. The area apparently has a lot of English and Russian speakers.
Latest Development:
The Thailand gig had some problems, partly due to the fact that Lori has a medical issue that is made worse by heat and humidity.
There were also some other confusing issues about visas, the contract, etc.
Anyway, they had been working on getting something in Korea - which had bee held up getting documentation, etc. - now it appears as if that is falling into place
More, later.
edit to add: any DUers in Korea

(6,719 posts)I am not familiar with your story. AND I can vouch for Thailand. Teaching English there is a great experience. And that close to BKK will give them lots of opportunities to use Embassies and libraries and social groups and churches and whatever else might be interesting to them. They will be safe and can move forward.

(22,000 posts)I know we have DUers in China, Japan, and Korea (Yo!). I visited Thailand (Phucket) about 10 years ago (this was about 4-5 months before the tsunami). I hope they are able to get out safely.

(25,771 posts)With 3 women in the house - and me - sometimes I feel like "I just live her . . . and if I wait around long enough sooner or later somebody will tell me what's going on"
anyway, I edited my original post to reflect this change. For reasons passing my understanding (not really) Thailand is out, Korea is in

(22,000 posts)The system here is very good. Once she has her health insurance card she (or her spouse) can walk in to a hospital or clinic and get treated. I won't ask what the problem is, but I hope it has nothing to do with breathing or lungs. We get all the pollutant crap from China from time to time and that can be a problem (mostly in the spring and fall). The last few years weren't bad at all, but Feb and March were bad.
