(4,185 posts)My father told me it's what they tell naval helmsmen and told me the same when teaching me navigation and operation. (May be a little outdated these days)
But, figuratively it's the greatest advice he ever gave me and it's kind of our family motto. (That and 'learn by doing' )
I guess, it's more of a way of life than a meaning of it (if that makes any sense)
The idea of be focused, in control and while life seems to be pointed in one direction, for better or worse, it isn't. Your next way point is where you are looking and ultimately steering.
It's also a tribute to him that his motto be slathered all over the Internet -

(146,218 posts)Kudos to your family for adopting a philosophy such as that.
As a boater, it did not make a lot of sense to me, as I rely a great deal on the boat to lead me and my decisions. That and the weather, lol.
But we are talking about two different things.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer.
Here's to your father.

(45,850 posts)which is a real recipe I found years ago on an international cooking site - had tomatoes, pineapple, peppers, and beer and dog, if I remember correctly the site said it tasted like mutton, I'll take their word for it

(23,545 posts)Actually, it is a fun book:
http://www.amazon.com/Sabotage-American-Workplace-Anecdotes-Dissatisfaction/dp/0962709131/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398575532&sr=1-1&keywords=sabotage+in+the+american+workplace
Lots of interesting stories about workers doing stuff because they were pissed.
So I think the person putting the sticker on the book had a good sense of humor.
